Residents invited to learn about their right to access information and internal appeals

The City’s Legal Services Department, through its Access to Information Unit and Legal Compliance Unit, will host a Public PAIA and Section 62 Appeals Awareness Campaign at the Cape Town Civic Centre on Wednesday, 24 June 2026. The public is encouraged to attend, if possible.

The campaign intends to empower residents with knowledge about the Promotion of Access to Information Act (PAIA), which gives everyone the legal right to request and access information held by the State, and to inform residents and staff of the right to appeal in terms of the Local Government Municipal Systems Act (Systems Act).
Members of the public and staff are encouraged to attend.
PAIA gives effect to Section 32 of the Constitution, which guarantees everyone the right of access to information held by the State, subject to certain exclusions prescribed by law.
Through PAIA, members of the public can request information using accessible and affordable procedures designed to promote openness and public participation.
Residents attending the awareness campaign will have an opportunity to engage directly with officials from the City’s Access to Information Unit, receive guidance on submitting PAIA requests and learn about the support services available through the Access to City Records Office at the Civic Centre.
The City will also host an information session related to internal appeals in terms of Section 62 of the Local Government Municipal Systems Act, 32 of 2000. The aim is to create awareness amongst residents and staff of the right to appeal decisions affecting their rights, taken by a political structure, political office bearer, councillor or staff member of a municipality.
